Week 2

On Friday, Druscilla and I went to SkyWatch Bird Rescue to speak with Amelia Mason, the founder and director of the organization. We discussed the details about my film and the more we spoke with Amelia, the more ideas I had to where the film's direction would go. She brought up several more issues within Wilmington regarding the welfare of local birds.

The issues Amelia mentioned include:

  • Diseases (gout and angel wing) caused by feeding birds (geese and ducks) bread
  • Chemical runoffs at retention ponds
  • Irresponsible fishing (hooks and lures left behind)
  • Diseases (conjunctivitis) caused by uncleansed birdfeeders
  • Local Cockfighting
  • Domestic cat attacks
  • Detached retinas and brain damage from hitting big windows
  • Bird hoarders, improper pet owners
  • Improperly disposed plastic (bags and soda rings)
With this new information, my topic could easily expand into a longer documentary film. I think I am going to keep my original focus on human-cased environmental issues within Wilmington that harms local wildlife. While I was at SkyWatch Bird Rescue, Amelia introduced us to a pair of young geese with the Angel wing. It is a incurable disease that causes the last joint of the wing to twist out laterally, making it impossible to fly. Angel wing is caused by an unnatural diet of white bread.

I found the "Interviewing Strategies" reading very useful for this week's assignment. It was a refreshers for how an interview should arch in complexity in order to make the interviewee feel comfortable. It also helped me think of general questions to ask for the environmental researchers, which is a complex subject that I know only a little about.
